[ARCHIVED] Lake City Youth Wash Cars for Upcoming Trip

Y.O.U.T.H. Car Wash

Youth washing a carOn a breezy spring morning behind the Lake City Police Department, Lake City youth were eager to spend the day washing cars to raise money for an upcoming trip to the Clemson Summit in Greenville.

Eight participants in the Y.O.U.T.H. Intervention Program volunteered their time during spring break to plan and participate in the car wash. During the event, the team washed more than 30 cars raising over $2,000 for their upcoming trip. In addition to the car wash, a hamburger or hot dog lunch was available for purchase.

“This event was priceless,” said program coordinator Marcus McGirt. “It gave our youth an opportunity to showcase their skill set with executing details of a carwash from start to finish, the ability to be free and have a safe haven around other youth and adults. We are Clemson ready!”

McGirt plans to host more car wash fundraisers during the summer and fall with program participants. “We had several people come up and ask if we could wash their cars every two weeks! There is a lot of demand to host an event like this more frequently,” said McGirt.

The Y.O.U.T.H. Intervention Program, or Youth with Opportunities Unifying & Transforming Humanity, originated through a grant awarded to the Lake City Police Department by the Office of Highway Safety and Justice Program. The goal of the program is to redirect and mentor youth within our neighborhoods and communities.
